This Is the Diary of A Girl

Campus Tour Part II

Carleton University
Im on the road on the way back to Brantford while writing this. Parking took a while to find, but it ended up being free because the meter wasnt working.
The tour was scheduled in the morning but I slept in. Good thing another family from Toronto was there who wanted to see the campus as well. It was my mother and I along with a girl on crutches with both her parents. We were unexpected but the university quickly accommodated us.
Carleton is quite smaller than Ottawa U but much more residence space. All the buildings are relatively consistent and easy to navigate. Students may never see the outside because of the underground tunnels that connect all the buildings together.
Some scholarships are available upon entry but only $1000 is rewarded to those over the average of 80 percent. It gets higher as the average increases but the guide didnt have all the results. I assume its $2000 for 85 percent and higher, $3000 for 90 percent etc. All courses are taught in English unless you are in language studies. Ottawa is completely bilingual. Carleton has winter activities but the winning team receives nothing. At Ottawa U, the winning team wins a trip to Cancun Mexico.
There are only two public buses that go to the campus. Only one shuttle to the grocery store each week, but most students hop on the Ottawa U bus to get downtown for free. The campus is nice and secure because it is like an island where the Rideau Canal is on one side and the Ottawa River is on the other. This brings a lot of wildlife to the university and its not like someone is just going to step on the campus and cause any trouble. The students themselves might because there is a bar on campus called Olivers.
Greg the tour guide was an experienced tourer but he didnt talk a lot about university life or city life. I needed to ask him questions in order to get more information from him. I dont feel compelled to go back. I rate my visit 7.9 out of 10. We didnt get to see the residences only because our visit was unarranged. I got the impression everything is common rooms like sharing kitchens and TV. Seems like they could spend more money on the university than just sports and TV cameras. Pretty sad for being in Ottawa. A lot of the courses are broadcasted on Rogers Television. Unlike Ottawa though, we saw the library, went right inside a few class rooms, and the athletics building has more things to do such as two ice rinks, two gyms, tennis court, basketball court, large track with a soccer field, squash courts, and Olympic sized pool. Thank goodness the pool is like Ottawas though.
