This Is the Diary of A Girl

The second last day!!!

In this entry, I have a lot to talk about for day nine, the second last day of the 2002 Commonwealth games. To make this not very long I just put the total metals for each country.
- Australia - 185.
England 146.
Canada - 106.
India - 38. And South Africa - 36.

Today was very interesting in Manchester. - Canadian boxers fought their way to four medals -- two gold and two silver -- Heavy weight Jason Douglas and light middleweight Jean Pascal both captured gold for Canada while bantam weight Andrew Kooner and super heavy weight David Cadieux fought their way to silver medals. -- a gold metal went to Pascal from Laval Quebec outpointed who Paul Smith of England 18-16 to take gold in the 71-kilogram finals. -- Another gold metal went to Jason Douglas, from "yaaaayy!" Kitchener, Ontario defeats Kertson Manswell of Trinidad and Tobago 20-13 to win another gold for the boxing team and for Canada.

Although Kooner claims silver, this I think was the best highlight of the day since the match was very close. -- Kooner of Tecumseh Ontario native narrowly lost the 54-kilogram boxing final in a ferocious battle against Justin Kane from Australia, that actually ended up even, 34-34, after four rounds. Because the bout finished in a tie, it went to a countback -- adding up the judges individual scores -- which Kane won 120-113.

Oh, And, the other silver went to Cadieux from Trois-Rivieres Quebec, who was defeated by David Dolan of India 27-10. Ouch, that was a defeat, but anyway, Cadieux earned silver.

Canada earned another gold metal by Clayton Miller of Kelowna British Columbia, who won the gold medal in the singles skeet shooting competition. Miller won with a score of 146 points, just one more than Michael Thomson from Scotland. And Antonis Nicolaides of Cyprus won a bronze metal with 144 points. It was a well earned metal for him and for Canada, since Miller has Skeeted for fifteen years.

It was very interesting to watch the Womens cycling competition. - Susan Palmer-Komar of Hamilton Ontario captured the silver medal in the women's cycling road race, finishing the 93.5-kilometre in two hours 35 minutes 17 seconds, just *only* one second behind gold medallist Nicole Cooke from Wales. Rachel Heal of England took the bronze metal. I am very *surprised* that no one from Australia claimed a metal for that competition. They were deffinitly great leaders and held back attackers, they also had great *speed* , so you could see why I was pretty surprised. But one thing is, a very strong Australian cyclest *fell and hit her head and scraped* her elbow on the rough groud of the rugged trail. When that happened, she was out of the race and the Canadians, Welch, and Englanders took the lead, while the remaining five Australians tried to take the lead.

I also really enjoyed watching the mens and womens swimming competition. - the mens breaststroke -- Justin Norris of Australiaa who went on to win the gold in 4:16.95. Brian Johns from Richmond British Columbia, touched .46 seconds later to claim the silver, and Adrian Turner of England won the bronze in 4:18.75.

the women's 100-metre butterfly -- Petria Thomas of Australia, won the event with a gold of course, with a time of 58.57 seconds - a victory of more

than a second over silver medallist Mandy Loots of South Africa. Jennifer Button from Waterloo, Ontario won the bronze metal.

the mens 100 metre freestyle -- Thorpe of Australia got gold in a record of 48.73 seconds. Ashley Callus of again Australia, who was nearly a second behind Thorpe, has the silver metal, and Ryk Neethling of South Africa with a bronze metal.

The semi-finals for the 50m breaststroke -- James Gibson for England, set a record in 27.56 seconds to capture gold, and Darren Mew also of England, was only .01 seconds behind his teammate. Morgan Knabe from Calgary, was third to claim a bronze metal for Canada.

Tomorrow, or actually way later today, will count for everything for the last day of the 2002 Commonwealth Games.

So see you then!

Till next time -
Jenna.
